The Bishop of Chelmsford, in consultation with the Dean and Chapter of Chelmsford Cathedral, seeks to appoint a Residentiary Canon for Learning and Nurture.
This pivotal leadership role will shape the spiritual growth and educational outreach of the Cathedral, taking lead responsibility for learning programmes, school engagement, adult discipleship, and the development of children and family’s work.
As a member of Chapter and the Senior Leadership Team, the Canon will share responsibility for the Cathedral’s strategic leadership, governance, and safeguarding culture, contributing to vision, planning, and statutory oversight. The Canon will also take a full part
in the liturgical, pastoral, and collegial life of the Cathedral, including residence, leadership in worship, pastoral care, and participation in the wider diocesan life.
We are looking for a collaborative leader who can nurture faith across generations while maintaining the highest standards of safety and organisational excellence.

The Dean’s Verger oversees, and works collaboratively with the verging team to ensure that the Cathedral is a place of prayer and welcome to all worshipers and visitors. They have care and oversight for the Cathedral building as a place of worship and ensure the highest standards are met for all services and events.

View the Job Pack Application FormChelmsford Cathedral is seeking a dedicated Safeguarding Officer to lead, maintain and build on the strong culture of safeguarding at Chelmsford Cathedral and carry out an effective lead safeguarding role as a key visible member of the Cathedral team.
The postholder will provide expert advice on safeguarding matters, ensuring compliance with law, government guidance, and Church of England policy. The role involves working closely with the Diocese, the National Safeguarding Team, and supporting the preparation for the INEQE safeguarding audit in February 2027.
Core duties include managing safeguarding casework, engaging sensitively with survivors and victims, and ensuring all safeguarding risks are effectively handled. The Officer will also be responsible for promoting best practice, overseeing safeguarding training and policy development, and managing two volunteer Safeguarding Assistants.
Presence and visibility within the Cathedral community, including attendance at services and events, is essential.

As a member of the Fabric Advisory Committee, appointees will provide determination on applications and advise the Cathedral Chapter (the governing body of the Cathedral) in line with the statutory responsibility of the Committee under the Care of Cathedrals Measure, remaining true to the values of the Cathedral and its role as a living place of worship.

There are around 250 volunteers here at Chelmsford Cathedral covering a great many roles which allows the Cathedral to open seven days a week, be a home to many community groups and continue to offer free entry to visitors.
