Children and Family Ministry

We love to welcome children and families to Chelmsford Cathedral.

We usually have lots planned so that we can have fun together while exploring the Christian faith.

Our Junior Church runs on Sunday mornings but there are special activities and events that take place in school holidays too. Continue reading this page to find out more including our latest events for you to join in with.

You are welcome to read our newsletter for Sunday 9th May where you will find Bible stories and lots of creative ideas.

Junior Church

Junior Church takes place at the same time as the Sunday morning eucharist.

After the 2020 Spring Coronavirus lockdown, Junior Church began to meet outside in the lovely Guy Harlings garden (behind the Diocesan and Cathedral offices) and continued there throughout the summer and autumn until the winter lockdowns.

It has become an interactive time of worship and learning for families of all ages – children and adults together.  We do ask you to book a free place to ensure we operate in a covid-secure way.  To book for this Sunday, please click on the Eventbrite link here.

The garden provides a relaxed and beautiful setting in which to worship and is right next to the Learning Centre whenever an indoor space is required.

We enjoy using the garden space to the full, getting to know God and one another better as we listen to stories and engage with the Bible, enjoy craft and trails and pray together. We hope that meeting outside will remain an important part of what we do, but we also look forward to the time when we are able to reconnect with the cathedral building and indoor congregation.

Muddy Church

Just before the 2020 Spring lockdown, plans were being made to start an outdoor ‘Muddy Church’ all-age congregation, once a month on a Sunday afternoon. The aim was to explore local areas of woodland, open spaces and nature reserves, delighting in God’s creation, thinking about the environment, getting know each other better and welcoming new people, sharing food and growing in faith together.

Muddy Church was put on hold, but was able to begin, in a more ‘home-based’ way, during the summer of 2020.  Our first Muddy Church of 2021 took place on Palm Sunday.

Our next two dates are available to book.  Please click on the link to book your free place. Muddy Church takes place at 3pm.

Sunday 23 May Meet Canon Imogen Nay at ARU (Marconi Building) to explore their wildlife areas.

Guy Harlings garden was our base and the first time we met, we explored the wonderful trees there. On subsequent occasions we searched for autumn fruits and thanked God for the vibrant colours of autumn, creating rainbows of leaves. Muddy Church will resume in Guy Harlings garden as soon as possible, and we look forward to, eventually, exploring some different environments and seeing the group grow and develop.

Special Events

We look forward to being able to welcome you back to special family events at the Cathedral. In the past these have included ‘stay and play’ Lego days in the cathedral (a lot of Lego and a lot of fun!), Pancake parties in the Learning Centre, ‘Summer Space’ (space to chill and play in the garden) and ‘Light up the night’ (marshmallow toasting, storytelling and lanterns) in Guy Harlings garden.

The Cathedral also has a family’s Facebook page. Do contact us via @chelmsfordcathedral to join the group.

Or email our Children and Family’s minister Jean Elliott for more details.
